Marangu Route

This is the most popular and easiest way to trek to the highest point in Africa. No mountain climbing skills are needed, but you must be fit. Expert guides take you on the trail, porters carry all your equipment and supplies and a cook prepares your meals. The trail has huts along its route, with all basic necessities. You have the choice of 5 to 6 days on the mountain. The 6 day trek shown below includes an extra day acclimatizing, the secret of a pleasant climb and an extra night at Horombo Hut.

DAY 1        After 1 hour drive to Marangu gate, walk for 3 to 4 hours along the rain forest trail to overnight in Mandara Hut (2700m).

DAY 2        Depart from Mandara Hut for a 5 to 7 hrs, 11 km walk that passes through a short stretch of forest to Maundi Crater, well worth the start detour to the rim for a superb view of Kilimanjaro. The trail continues across a meadow and a wooded stream to emerges into grassland and crosses numerous open moorland ravines before you overnight at Horombo Hut, 3720m high, in a rocky valley.

DAY 3        Some climbers suffer from breathlessness, irritability and headaches, so its essential to spend a day being properly acclimatized. Ascend high up into the saddle on 2 to 3 hours trek, then relax for r lunch. As you descend again to spend a second night in Horombo Hut, you will appreciate and discover the secret of successful acclimatization.

DAY 4        Trek for about 6 hours through rocky and rugged terrain, past the last water point to overnight at Kibo Hut (4700m), the last hut before the summit.

DAY 5        Depart shortly after midnight, when the loose stone is frozen making it easier to climb on 10 to 12 hr trek. Travel across an uneven trail that leads to Hans Meyer cave, a good resting place. Then though regular switchbacks most of the way to the top, with a last minute scramble over rocks to the rim of the crater at 5685m, past Stella point, to conquer Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa and enjoy stunning views of the ice walls offset by rugged rocks. After a fast descent to Kibo Hut for tea and rest, continue to Horombo Hut, to overnight.

DAY 6        After an easy 5 to 6 hours descent to Marangu gate, a card will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel for a long overdue hot shower, with time to relax and celebrate your conquest.
